Kuni is a 42-year-old lady, who lives with her husband and two children, ages 15 and 10 years old, in a small village in the Cuttack district, Odisha, India. In the picture, the lady standing with her hand raised is Kuni. She is engaged in paddy cultivation. Her husband is doing the same business. Some years ago, Kuni formed a group with seven other women from her village and named the group Sree Raghunath Self-Help Group (SHG). The group members are engaged in different business activities, such as selling milk, vegetable cultivation, etc., to alleviate their poverty.

Kuni is the president of this group. She motivated all the group members to form this group so they could help and support each other in their business and personal lives. Kuni along with her group requested a loan. She will use her portion to purchase standard-quality seeds and fertilizers for her paddy cultivation. She hopes to build a house for her family, and she is very grateful to Kiva for this opportunity.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
