Valentina
Valentina is married, 44 years old, and the mother of 4 children. She dedicated a large part of her life to caring for her children.

Ten years ago, she started a business venture due to the need to feed her family. She sells vegetables at wholesale price. Her husband works with her by collecting and transporting the vegetables from farms and greenhouses located from from where they do business. In this way, Valentina can pay for tuition and food for her 4 children. Two of them are studying in primary school and the other two are in secondary school.

Valentina's dream is to see her children become professionals, and she makes every effort to make that future a reality.

Her business goes through problems related to the weather--the constant rains or droughts. This causes variation in the prices of vegetables. It's because of these problems that she often can't pull together the capital needed to buy vegetables in large quantities.

This is the reason that Valentina is requesting a loan to buy vegetables at wholesale, so she can increase her stock and be able to pay the school tuition for her 4 children.

More information about this loan

This loan is part of an innovative partnership between Kiva Labs and Innovations for Poverty Action to evaluate the effects of product design changes on the welfare of micro-entrepreneurs and on the viability of microfinance institutions. Through this partnership, Emprender is testing several alterations to existing products that aim to address the limitations of financial services currently available to the poor by offering lower interest rates and/or more flexible payment dates. This loan is being offered to the borrower with innovative flexible loan schedule and a reduced interest rate. Because this product is low-interest, previously untested and potentially riskier for the microfinance institution, funding this loan on Kiva is particularly important to Emprender.
