Sangita, aged about 20 years, is the group leader for the ten members of the group "Maa Mangala SHG" of Koraput district of Odisha state in India. Her family is composed of five members: herself, her husband, her parents-in-law and one child.

The member seated second from the left is Sangita. She is a very active lady who wants some extra income from her own efforts. She has been running a grocery cum general store in her village with the support of her husband for the last two years.

Sangita, along with the other nine members from her village, formed a group, and it is the first time they will take out a loan from People's Forum for development of their existing businesses. At present, her family income is about Rs. 5,000 per month, which is not sufficient to maintain her family.

To improve her living conditions and to earn some extra income, she wants to access a loan. From the loan, she will purchase toothpaste, shampoo, detergent, soap, rice, edible oil, biscuits, sugar, etc., as general household items for resale.

She has a dream: to build a house for her family. She is excited to have this loan, and she is very thankful to Kiva for this support.

About People's Forum

People’s Forum is a development organization based in Odisha, India that provides affordable loan products and support services to women. The organization distinguishes itself by reaching out to particularly marginalized groups, including leprosy-affected families, widows, single mothers, and disabled persons. People’s Forum will harness Kiva’s flexible, zero-interest capital to serve even more borrowers in one of the poorest regions of India.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
