Madhavi
Alvaro (left) and his sister Elizabeth (right) met Madhavi (center) 10 years ago in their hometown of Ticul, Campeche. They started working together promoting crop diversity through the preservation of native seeds and traditional Mayan production techniques.

In 2011 they created Toojil Xiimbal to develop two agro-ecological farms for the production of organic vegetables, pigs, chickens and vermicompost (worm compost).

Toojil Ximbal needs $48,069 MXP to start producing and selling vermicompost. They already have two worm beds and potential clients. With this loan, they will have the money to build 6 additional worm beds and to buy bags and a bag sealer for the distribution of vermicompost.

By making vermicompost available for local farmers, this project will reduce the use of chemicals; improve the soil’s physical structure and water holding capacity; enrich soil in micro-organisms and enhance germination, plant growth, and crop yield.

Madhavi, Elizabeth and Alvaro’s goal is to use the vermicompost business revenues to set up the organic production of pigs, chickens and vegetables in order to convince more people of the benefits of sustainable framing practices.
