Ljubinka
The borrower, Ljubinka, is a married mother of 3 adult children, who are all married and living with their own families. She and her husband still live together in a minority community of Kosovo, where he receives a pension and she continues to work as a nurse, which she has been doing for her entire life. The house they are living in is very old and has not had any renovations since the money they had went to pay for her children, their education and the food for them all. Now, for the first time, she is requesting a loan to change the doors and windows. This loan will help her to have better living conditions and a comfortable environment. She is very grateful for the chance to finally complete these repairs and promises to pay on time.

More information about this loan

This loan will support the economic aspirations of minority people in Kosovo. Roma people and ethnic Serbians have historically faced a tremendous amount of hardship in Kosovo, and are still socioeconomically and politically vulnerable. During the 1998-1999 war, the fighting displaced 250,000 people. Among those displaced were an estimated 80-90% of the region’s Roma population. Today, Roma and ethnic Serbians living in Kosovo still face discrimination and are excluded from many aspects of society, including fair political representation and high rates of unemployment. By supporting this loan you are helping provide opportunity to marginalized populations.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
