The "Yana Pacuna" communal bank is starting its seventh loan cycle at the Collpani regional office of "Pro Mujer". The group has eight members, and is run by a board of directors that has Lucy as its president. The members have different businesses, including selling trousers, making "enaguas" (traditional skirts), selling meat, grocery stores, production of sports clothes, selling meals, selling jumpers, and selling glass products.

This loan will benefit microenterprises in Lucy's group. Lucy herself tells us that she joined "Pro Mujer" four years ago, following an invitation from a neighbour who was a member of the organisation. Lucy currently has a business selling coca leaves. She tells us that she started this business four years ago when she decided to join "Pro Mujer"; she also already knew how to sell the product.

This loan will be used to increase capital by buying more coca leaves from sellers in the city of La Paz; Lucy will then sell the leaves. This work allows Lucy to earn an income to support her family; she has a partner and two children.

When asked what she likes about "Pro Mujer", Lucy responds that she likes the loans and her group.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
