Luke
Luke is a new cacao farmer who lives in the beautiful village of Punta Gorda, in the Toledo district of southern Belize. He sees cacao farming as a beneficial long-term investment for himself and his family. Luke believes that cacao is a sustainable agricultural crop, that is both good for the environment, and will help develop his local community. He wants to secure a Kiva microloan so that he might expand his cacao farm by purchasing grafted, high-yielding, disease resistant cacao seedlings. He plans to use the revenue generated from his cacao crop to educate his children and improve his family’s lifestyle.

About Maya Mountain Cacao

Maya Mountain Cacao (MMC) is a for-profit social enterprise that sources premium cacao beans from smallholder farmers in Belize. Founded in 2010, it generates income for marginalized farmers while promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the southern part of the country.

These cacao farmers use Kiva credit to invest in farm maintenance, improvement and expansion. For example, they might hire workers to help with the harvest or buy inputs such as better tools and seedlings.
