Geiner is 43 years old, is married, and lives with his children and wife, who are his number one priority. With this loan, he intends to purchase fertilizer and fungicide, and pay for the labor to sow and cultivate his avocado farm. He also intends to purchase some avocado trees to replant at the beginning of the rainy season. He plans to do this to increase the density of plants and take advantage of the fertility of the soil, climate conditions, and other factors that favor the growth of avocados.

With these improvements to his crops, he hopes to make a little profit, improving the living conditions of his family. He also hopes to invest a little more in his fields to fulfill other goals.

This is the first loan that he has received from Fudecosur. He hadn't ever received other loans from state banks, but Fudecosur has given him this loan more easily and with a much lower interest rate.

More information about this loan

FUDECOSUR works in one of the poorest regions of Costa Rica, where microfinance institutions (MFIs) are scarce or have a hard time keeping up with demand for small loans. By providing mostly agricultural loans, FUDECOSUR reaches rural borrowers that many MFIs consider to be too risky. However, this has also made it more difficult for the organization to find stable sources of capital to lend. Kiva's flexible, risk-tolerant capital plays a critical role in helping FUDECOSUR grow its portfolio and support even more borrowers.

The Foundation for the Development of Southern Communities (FUDECOSUR) is dedicated to economically empowering its clients by providing credit and training programs that help improve living conditions for micro-entrepreneurs and their children across Southern Costa Rica.
