Sefali is a young woman of only 29 years. She is married, a housewife, and a mother of one son and one daughter. She is still very energetic, hardworking and optimistic. Her husband Rabindra, age 28, cultivates their own land, which he received from his ancestors. They live in Baroghoria in the district of Jalpaiguri. She is very much concerned about providing her children with an education. They are in grades nine and five, respectively.

Sefali's husband has always worked in agriculture, which he learned from his father. He is the only earning member in the family and always strives for the betterment of his family. Sefali, though a housewife, helps her husband in his agricultural activities. They mainly cultivate seasonal vegetables and fruits and sell them in the local market. But it is very difficult for them to run a family of four members in a decent way with such a small income. They thought of expanding their business and cultivating jute, which is a profitable crop. They cannot fulfill their dream due to a lack of capital.

Sefali has applied for a loan from BJS to purchase jute seeds and other necessary farm supplies related to cultivation. She hopes it will be a lucrative business and will provide them with more profit to give her family financial stability.

She is grateful to Kiva and BJS for this financial support.

This loan targets women in the financially underserved parts of India. With a largely rural population, the Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar districts in the state of West Bengal are severely lacking in infrastructure and are three of the poorest districts in Eastern India.  This loan enables female entrepreneurs to maintain their current businesses in an area that is under-developed and poorly served by financial institutions
