The "FLOR Y CIELO" [Flower and Sky] Communal Bank consists of eight members, and has a Board of Directors headed by Señora Cipriana. The members run businesses that include two grocery stores and sales of cell phones, clothing, hats, and cosmetics. Flor y Cielo is about to start its first loan cycle with Pro Mujer [Pro Woman], and works with the organization's German Busch Regional Office.

The loan that the Flor y Cielo members are applying for will benefit their small businesses, including Señora Cipriana's business selling plastic bags. Señora Cipriana started the business herself after observing extensive sales of plastic bags. She states that she joined Pro Mujer four years ago at the invitation of her sister-in-law, who is a Pro Mujer member.

Señora Cipriana will use the funds from this loan to increase her working capital for the wholesale purchase of plastic bags from distributors. She will then sell the bags to order. Señora Cipriana is married and the mother of five children, and her business allows her to earn income to support her family.

Asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, Señora Cipriana notes that the organization offers health care.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
