Mary A. sells "mukene" (a small silvery fish) wholesale to both her local community and business people from Lugazi and the neighbouring towns. Mary received a previous Kiva loan with which she was able to buy a boat and fishing net, and is now part of this group loan request. With her share of the loan, together with the contribution from her husband, she plans to continue with the construction of her family house, as well as complete payments for her children's school fees.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
