Nikolin is a 27-year-old married man who is requesting this loan to purchase some equipment for a dairy farm that he’s been running for a couple of years. Note that the photograph has been taken inside his barn, which is almost empty of equipment. Nikolin collects raw milk from villagers around his area and makes cheese, cottage cheese and butter, all organic.
The village where Nikolin lives has extremely cold weather. During the summer months, residents of this village and others nearby make sure to stock up on food items for the long winters. Potatoes, onions, garlic, and corn and wheat flours are some winter staple foods. As for the preparation of the flour, there is a primitive mill in the village that grinds the corn and wheat for locals for a small fee.
About VisionFund Albania
VisionFund Albania is a micro-finance subsidiary of child hunger nonprofit World Vision International. Striving to improve child welfare, the organization offers a variety of loan products designed for rural, traditionally underserved clients and their families. These products include agriculture, business and household improvement loans, as well as "integration loans" targeted to help the poorest, most vulnerable Albanian households acquire value chain resources.
While VFA is focused on the empowerment of the poor overall, it pays special attention to women. About 60% of loans to entrepreneurs on Kiva go to women.
