Tungdarshang
This young and vibrant woman, Tungdarshang, loves to fly high and explore the world. In the photo, she is featured with her mother. Tungdarshang belongs to one of a minor tribe in Manipur, India. She grew up in a tribal-oriented family. She has six siblings, and she is the fourth child to her parents. She has loving parents who can sacrifice all their comforts and needs just to fulfill their children’s wishes. Her father is the lone breadwinner of the family.

Sometimes they find it very difficult to manage the family with just the meager monthly income of her father. Though her mother is a homemaker, her undying spirit to nurture and support her children in any career to which they aspire is such an inspiration to the children. “What I am today is all because of my mother. I give all the credit to her,” says Tungdarshang.

Ever since her childhood, she always dreamed to become an airline hostess. Once she had been selected as a flight attendant at one of the airlines, but due to the poor financial condition, her parents could not meet the desired security deposit for the aviation training, which is mandatory for all the successful candidates. However, this time again, when the cabin crew interview was conducted in Imphal, she was selected. She didn't want to let the opportunity slip away this time. Therefore, she inquired of a few of her friends to give financial assistance because there is no one in the family who could financially support her. Her friends, who are also members of Kiva, recommended WSDS for giving education loans to those who need financial assistance.

She believes that with the help of this loan, she will be able to smoothly fulfill her dreams to fly high, and prays that such glorious work flourishes forever.

In the future, she wishes to pay back the loan amount once she starts earning, provide financial help to her parents and ensure her other siblings get a good education, and earn her living.

About WSDS-Initiate
WSDS-Initiate is an inclusive nonprofit that works with women across all tribes and minority communities in Manipur, located in the remote northeast region of India. Most organizations concentrate their work in the plains region of Manipur, but WSDS is among the very few organizations serving women in the isolated hills. Political unrest and frequent economic blockades in the area make it very difficult to provide services, resulting in Manipur having the lowest penetration of financial services in the country.
