Johana Carolina
Johana is 33 years old and she grew up with her paternal grandparents. She was not able to study because her grandparents did not have the resources to be able to buy her school supplies and send her to school. She says remembering that sometimes makes her sad since she would have wanted to prepare herself. When she became an adult she got married and set up her modest home. She has three children whom she motivates daily to go to school and study.

She and her husband make a living in agriculture and raising pigs, although their largest source of income is harvesting dry grains. This allows them to control and maintain the basic needs of the home. There is no electric light in the house and at night what they do is use oil lamps or candles for light. She wants to be able to get the loan to buy and install a solar power system in her house.

More information about this loan

TECNOSOL is a for-profit renewable energy company that provides electricity and solar powered products to families living off the grid in Nicaragua. It enables households to generate their own energy and replace toxic and expensive sources of light and heat like kerosene, diesel and wood.

Many of TECNOSOL's clients cannot afford the high upfront costs of buying solar products. Kiva loans help these households purchase clean energy products.

Solar home systems are much more than a solar lamp and can provide users with life changing amounts of power: enough power to run multiple lights, home appliances, radios, and TVs. These systems are modular, enabling clients to add solar panels and batteries to meet their increasing energy demands.
