Andrea is a married father of two. He has been photographed in his home yard. The two rows covered with waterproof material are called "warm beds" among villagers in Albania. This is where the seeds are thrown first during cold months in order to become seedlings, and then they are planted outside when the weather gets better.
Agriculture/livestock is the only means of living for Andrea’s family. The loan that he is requesting from Kiva lenders will be used to prepare the soil and buy fertilizers and seeds for planting. Andrea has one dairy cow that produces more than 15 kg milk per day; he uses some of it for the family and sells the rest. Andrea also plants wheat, corn, sage, and animal fodder in large quantities.
About VisionFund Albania
VisionFund Albania is a micro-finance subsidiary of child hunger nonprofit World Vision International. Striving to improve child welfare, the organization offers a variety of loan products designed for rural, traditionally underserved clients and their families. These products include agriculture, business and household improvement loans, as well as "integration loans" targeted to help the poorest, most vulnerable Albanian households acquire value chain resources.
While VFA is focused on the empowerment of the poor overall, it pays special attention to women. About 60% of loans to entrepreneurs on Kiva go to women.
