Firm Foundation School
Firm Foundation will repay this loan from their school fees, which they collect each term. This will be supplemented by the sale of carbon credits, which the school will generate from using the water tank. Brian ultimately hopes that having access to safe drinking water will improve his student’s concentration and attendance by reducing the number of children that fall sick from water-borne diseases as well as increase the number of students coming to the school.
More information about this loan
This loan supports the purchase of a Safe Water System for a school, health clinic or other institution located in Kampala's urban slums. This will increase access to safe water, reduce the cost burden of fuels used to boil and sanitize water, and help people adopt healthier sanitation practices. The loan repayment structure will depend on the safe water technology and whether it is credited under the Gold Standard or the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Technologies under the Gold Standard will be repaid through a combination of carbon credit revenue and payments by the borrowing institution while technologies under the CDM will be repaid 100% by the borrowing institutions. Institutions in urban slums provide drinking water to hundreds of people. The costs of providing safe water are high, and institutions must allocate a significant portion of an already-strained budget toward fuel for boiling water. Energy-efficient water treatment technologies greatly reduce fuel costs for institutions but very few can afford them.
This Kiva loan will be used to provide borrowers with needed goods or services, as opposed to cash or financial credit.
About Impact CarbonImpact Carbon is a non-profit organization that focuses on building sustainable business models to increase the distribution of clean energy technologies. The organization seeks to deliver measureable social and environmental impact, while demonstrating commercial viability and scale.
Impact Carbon has worked to bring clean technologies (improved cookstoves, safe water technologies) to millions of people in Uganda affected by energy poverty.
Impact Carbon leverages carbon finance to fund their projects. Funds come from the sale of carbon credits generated by quantifying the greenhouse gas emission reductions generated from their projects, as well as other impact investments. Impact Carbon's work improves health, reduces poverty, and improves local environments, while mitigating climate change.
