In the lowlands of Montecristi, a city known for the diversity of its traditional products (for example, the straw Panama hats known inside and outside of the country), the members of the loan group Sagrado Corazón De Jesús (Holy Heart of Jesus) meet every 15 days. This is a group composed of ten women and two men, who some time ago decided to form this group and gain access to the loans that the organization offers in order to improve their businesses and their quality of life.

One of the members of this group is Nelly. She is 52 years old and is married. From this marriage she has 5 grown children, but the youngest of them still lives with her. Her husband works in a fish factory in Manta.

Nelly is a persevering woman who likes to work and use her efforts to help her husband to get ahead. She works raising poultry. She has a small chicken farm; at times she buys from 100 to 200 chickens, which she raises over two to three months. This is the amount of time that it takes for them to be ready to sell. When they are ready, she plucks them and delivers them to some local stores. She also sells them by the pound from her house.

She works from three to four hours per day feeding and caring for her animals, and thanks to this, she is able to earn something to benefit her household without leaving her home. She is going to use this new loan to buy chickens, feed, and medicine so that they have better growth. She has been with the loan group from the beginning, and she enjoys it because of the help that it offers her. Her wish is to have good health.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
