In this Group: Marcos , Diego, Nicolas, Martin , Isabel, Manuela, Juana, Diego, Francisco
Diego, the first person from the right in the picture, is 45 years old. He is single and lives with his three children in Nahualá, Sololá. Diego says his business is growing 'maxan' (the plant calathea lutea). Its leaves are used to wrap and preserve food, so this plant is a profitable product. He learned this work from his parents and it is also something that he enjoys doing and that allows him to make a good income. The profits help him contribute to his household's economy.

He has been in this business ever since he was a child, so by now he is very knowledgeable about it. That is why one day he decided to form a group in order to diversify his products on the market and obtain higher incomes for all the members of the group and their families. They will use the loan to buy supplies to maintain their plants. His dream is to expand his crops so that he can offer his customers a higher volume of product.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
