K. Maritta is an herbalist. She prepares local herbs for treatment of high blood pressure, diabetes, ulcers, syphilis, and many other sicknesses. She has been able to sustain the health of AIDS patients for a long time; her herbs prevent the skin disorders that usually affect such patients and this has won her more clients. She has three workers who help with looking for the herbs in the swamps and bushes around her area. She sells from her home, and due to the efficiency of her drugs, many have come to her. She is proud to say that her driving force for doing what she does best is her late grandmother's spirit that gives her the wisdom to treat people using local medicine. Before becoming an herbalist, she sold used clothes by moving around to daily markets, a business she left for her daughter to manage. She is married with six children and cares for three grandchildren whose parents died without leaving them a penny. The loans help with the children's upkeep and school fees, plus paying her workers. The profits from the herbs help her to pay back her loans.
