Kanou Group

The Kanou Group is made up of six married women who are, on average, 33 years old and have three children. They live in traditional, extended families in the Tabakoro district of the town of Koumantou. They know one another through business, friendship and neighbourhood ties.

In order to strengthen their financial capacity and improve their businesses, the women have decided to work with the field partner, Soro Yiriwaso, this will be their first group loan.

The women sell bananas. Kadia (sitting third from the left in the photo) also sells bananas. She will use her loan to buy 50 kg of rice from wholesalers in Bougouni. She sells her product at the market and from door-to-door, to various customers, for cash or on credit.

Kadia expects to earn a monthly average of 6,500 francs CFA, which she will invest in her business and use to repay her loan.

Le groupe KANOU est constitué de 6 femmes mariées ayant une moyenne d’âge de 33 ans et 3 enfants. Elles vivent dans des familles traditionnelles élargies dans le quartier TABAKORO de la ville de Koumantou.
Elles se sont connues à travers des liens de voisinage, d’amitié et de commerce. Pour renforcer leur capacité financière afin de mieux faire leur commerce, elles ont adhéré à l’institution de microfinance Soro Yiriwaso avec laquelle elles sont à leur 1er prêt. Ce groupe de femmes fait le commerce de bananes à l’image de KADIA qui est la 3ème femme assise dans la photo de la gauche vers la droite. Elle compte acheter avec son prêt, 50 kg de riz avec les grossistes de Bougouni. Elle effectue ses ventes au marché et à domicile, en détail au comptant et à crédit à une clientèle mixte .
Elle envisage réaliser un bénéfice mensuel moyen de 6.500FCFA qui sera investi dans les activités et rembourser le prêt.

Soro Yiriwaso is a microfinance institution that works primarily in rural and semi-urban areas of Mali to provide underprivileged communities with access to financial services.The organization facilitates access for disadvantaged clients, particularly women, to new resources and services, fostering solidarity and cooperation among its clients. Kiva lenders’ funds will enable Soro Yiriwaso to expand its outreach and target even more underserved Malians involved in business and agriculture.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
