Maria
María, 48, only finished 6th grade since when she was in school there weren't many opportunities for continuing her studies. However, her parents taught her to work the land from a young age. She now has two children of her own who are in school in their community. She makes her income from coffee, a trade that has been in her family, as well as her husband's, for generations. They have carried on the trade for more than 8 years, planting and cultivating coffee as well as some vegetables just for their household. Maria thanks God because her land is productive and is located in the same community where she lives, about a 10km bus ride.

Maria's dream is for her children to graduate so that they can have a better future, and her goal is for her business to grow and diversify so that she isn't dependent only on coffee. She will achieve this by improving her current crop and earning profits which little by little she will use to reach her goals.

Because of this, she has asked for a loan from the cooperative COMIXMUL with the goal of buying agricultural inputs to maintain her coffee crops for this new season.

More information about this loan

These loans are designed for female farmers who produce a variety of products (onion, garlic, eggplant, spinach, mango, strawberries, etc.). Loan terms will vary depending on need, and borrowers can choose to make a "bullet" payment timed with harvest profits. Agricultural loans are considered risky in Honduras due to external forces like unpredictable weather and worldwide crop prices. As a result, many traditional financial institutions are unwilling to offer these loans. With Kiva funding, COMIXMUL will be able to reach more borrowers with agricultural loans tailored to their needs.
