Through her first loan, Emelina was able to acquire agricultural inputs that were an enormous help in assistance and very efficient maintenance of her coffee crops, all of which helped her to reap an excellent coffee harvest. This successful harvest helped her to sell at a very good price with various intermediaries in the area, despite the low prices in the market. Also, in her first financing. she succeeded in purchasing 1500 units of coffee seeds, which she could plant and extend her crops a little more. She is grateful for the support provided by investors of KIVA and the cooperative COMIXMUL, who she believes are not only very interested in the well-being and development of each of the small farmers and others, but in helping them move forward with this form of support which is welcome. The support is very beneficial as there are payment options, and flexibility to get her harvest and be working in the best way possible. Recently, she approached the cooperative COMIXMUL to request a second loan which will allow her to buy more manure, plant fertilizers that are absorbed through the leaves, and fertilizers, among other things which will help the new planted crop and the old crop. After the coffee plant is cut, the plant deteriorates and these types of inputs help to strengthen them once more, providing the nutrients they need to once again produce an excellent grain.

More information about this loan

These loans are designed for female farmers who produce a variety of products (onion, garlic, eggplant, spinach, mango, strawberries, etc.). Loan terms will vary depending on need, and borrowers can choose to make a "bullet" payment timed with harvest profits. Agricultural loans are considered risky in Honduras due to external forces like unpredictable weather and worldwide crop prices. As a result, many traditional financial institutions are unwilling to offer these loans. With Kiva funding, COMIXMUL will be able to reach more borrowers with agricultural loans tailored to their needs.
