The communal bank "Rosas Lindas" (Pretty Roses) will begin its 24th loan cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the German Busch regional office. It is comprised of nine members run by a board of directors, where Marielena is the president. The members of the bank run a wide variety of businesses, involving sales, services, and even furniture making.

This loan will benefit one of the small businesswomen in Marielena's communal bank. She said that it's been two years since she joined Pro Mujer, and that she joined at the invitation of a friend who was already a member. She currently runs a business selling furniture, a line of work she learned from her father, who sold the same thing. With capital she got from Pro Mujer, she decided to start her own independent business.

The loan she is taking out now is to increase her capital through the purchase of furniture bought at wholesale, which she will acquire in the markets in the city of El Alto, and later sell in her own store. This work generates enough income for her to keep going to school, as she is currently enrolled in the university.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, Marielena replied that she likes the health clinic that the institution offers.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
