Elsi Esperanza
Thanks to her first loan, Elsi purchased the necessary supplies and fertilizers to be able to tend to her coffee plants and protect them from pests and other diseases that could have affected and damaged them if not treated in time. She is thankful for the support provided by Kiva investors and the cooperative Comixmul, whom she believes are very interested in the well-being and development of every small farmer and the rest. With her first loan she was able to sow a part of land that she had acquired since part of the coffee she is currently growing is old. Today, Elsi is applying for a second loan that will allow her to buy fertilizer, weedkillers, general assistance with her coffee farm, and payment for labor. This are the greatest needs to assure an excellent production and excellent care. The profits will be used to fulfill her labor payments, improve her quality of life, to buy more farm land, and to invest in her business which is waiting to be helped again.

More information about this loan

These loans are designed for female farmers who produce a variety of products (onion, garlic, eggplant, spinach, mango, strawberries, etc.). Loan terms will vary depending on need, and borrowers can choose to make a "bullet" payment timed with harvest profits. Agricultural loans are considered risky in Honduras due to external forces like unpredictable weather and worldwide crop prices. As a result, many traditional financial institutions are unwilling to offer these loans. With Kiva funding, COMIXMUL will be able to reach more borrowers with agricultural loans tailored to their needs.
