For the last fifteen years he has farmed coffee on a large scale. He has a supportive wife who helps him supervise the laborers in the shambas, or fields. He also has at least six laborers who assist him in planting, weeding and harvesting the coffee.
Fred is working to modernize his coffee shambas through mulching and the use of fertilizers. He therefore is applying for a 1,500,000 UGX loan for this purpose. With this, he hopes to get a better yield.
As part of his future plans, Fred wants to buy more land and plant more coffee so that before 2018 he will be considered one of Bugangari’s model farmers.
