One of the members of this group is acting as the KIVA representative. She is Mitarani, the lady in the picture standing with a raised hand. She is 32 years old, married and has two children. One goes to school and the younger one is at home. Mitarani's husband works as a day laborer. The house they live in is their own.

This member learned to work in the fields from her parents at a young age. It is now her way of life. Agriculture provides her income. In addition to planting vegetables, Mitarani has a greenhouse for tomatoes. At the moment, it is working out well. She also earns a living raising animals like goats and milk cows . Her work gives her the opportunity to be at home to take care of her family.

Mitarani is taking this loan because she wants to keep investing in her business. The profit she earns is a great help in meeting her family's expenses. The money from this loan will be invested in the purchase of seeds and fertilizer for her greenhouse. Mitarani's goal is to help her children have decent careers.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
