The communal association 'ESTRELLITAS DEL MAR" will be beginning a second loan cycle with Pro Mujer through their Achacachi regional hub. The group is made up of nine members and is run by a board of directors headed by Juana, the President. The businesses of the members of this communal association are varied, including selling clothing, knitting sweaters, selling cosmetic products, running a neighborhood store, selling groceries, selling backpacks, and selling electronic items.

The loan they will take out will benefit small microentrepreneurs, including Juana. She says that she has been part of Pro Mujer for two years, having become a member at the invitation of one of the institution's outreach officers, who came to visit her at home. Juana currently has a business running a neighborhood store; she explains that she learned this business some years ago, upon observing that her neighbors needed a place to buy things.

The loan she will take out now is to increase her capital, to buy preserved foods and staple items which she will get from wholesale vendors from the city of El Alto, and later sell herself in her store. This method of working allows her to generate resources to support her family, as she lives in a common-law marriage and has five children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, Juana said that she likes the training that they offer.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
