Martha Lucía
Martha has been a housewife since she got married. She is the mother of two children whom she took care of and brought up with great effort and love. Once they were grown she had more free time so she began to teach herself different crafts such as sewing and handicrafts. Little by little she created her products and began to sell them to her neighbors and friends. She added in clothing which added to her income. This has generated income which supports her husband with the household finances.

The loan she is seeking will be used to invest in the purchase of supplies and merchandise at wholesale (fabric, thread, paint, ceramic figurines, etc.). This will allow her to continue to work and offer more variety to her customers. It will also allow her to fulfill the orders she already has, and will increase her sales and income. Martha states that her future plans are to strengthen and grow her business even more with the aim of generating job opportunities for some family members who need it and thereby improve the quality of life for her whole family.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
