Carlos De Jesús
48-year-old Carlos lives with his wife and their 3 children whom he has helped to get on in life with a great deal of effort. He always worked as an employee in various companies but 6 months ago he started his own business, a vegetarian restaurant, with the idea of giving his customers delicious healthy food. His wife came up with the idea, since she and one of their daughters are vegetarian. He works there every day with help from his wife. The restaurant has been well received in the area and has been gradually growing, as it gets visits from local residents and tourists who visit the municipality.

The loan he is asking for will be used to buy supplies wholesale (vegetables, Carve [brand of soy protein], fruit and other items). This will enable him to continue with his work and offer a better variety of nutritious and healthy food to his diners, thus increasing his sales and his profit margin.

Carlos says his biggest dream is for his business to receive recognition and be able to position himself in the market, so that more and more people adopt a healthy lifestyle and visit his business. This will enable him to improve the profitability of the business, improve the wellbeing of his family and provide a good quality education for his youngest son.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
