Juana is a 29-year-old woman who has a live-in partner and two children. Juana sells fresh fruit juice (prepared when it is ordered) at the F. Vivanco market, located in downtown Ayacucho. Juana started this business 3 months ago thanks to her friend’s advice. Her business is steadily increasing at the moment. She used to sell vegetables at the Las Américas market, but her sales were low and she did not earn enough income.

Juana needs a loan of 1,000.00 PEN, which she will invest in the purchase of soft drinks, milk, eggs, and fruit.

Journal entries for Juana

Subject: Juana's Kiva loan
Location: Location Undisclosed, Peru

Juana used her Kiva loan of 1000 soles to buy more basic foodstuffs, like rice, sugar and oil (she sells these items from the same stand where she makes juice). Her sales have neither improved nor worsened dramatically since she invested the money. Sale have increased in recent weeks because of the holiday season, but that is normal for this time of year, she says.

Juana has been working with FINCA Peru for the past year and a half, and says that her work with the institution has been a great help to offer a wider variety of products so that she can sell a bit more. Her goal for the future is to save up so that she can pay for her children’s education (her two children are currently 3 and 12 years old).
