Margaret Mangeli is 37 years old and married with a five-year-old child. She also cares for her younger sister who attends a local college. Margaret's interest in sewing started in 1999 when she made the choice not to move to the rural areas to work in the farms; instead, she got her husband to take her to a sewing school. After gaining sewing skills she worked with a woman known as Mama Brian who helped her refine her skills. With time, however, payments from Mama Brian decreased and work became sparse, so she decided to set out on her own.

With her savings she bought herself a sewing machine and placed herself at a corner in the streets where she would be able to attract customers. In time she established a solid customer base and with the help of one such customer she learned of a room that was for rent. She has been there since April 2000. Her main challenge that Margaret faces is the lack of variety in her materials, which causes some customers to seek elsewhere. She is therefore requesting a loan to purchase materials such linings and buttons, which will enable her to better cater to her customers. She thanks her lenders in advance for their help.

Location: Pipeline ,nairobi, Kenya

Dear Lender,

This is an update on your loan to a borrower working with Action Now: Kenya in Kenya. Thank you for supporting low-income entrepreneurs by lending through Kiva.

You may have noticed that repayments on this loan have not been coming in for quite some time. After detailed investigation by Kiva representatives in Kenya, our team has determined that further repayments on your loan will be considerably delayed. However, Kiva staff are working closely with our Field Partner, Action Now: Kenya, who manages this loan on the ground to arrange the gradual repayment of your loan. To learn more, please visit:

Although your loan is delinquent, we hope you realize that over 95% of loans on Kiva have been repaid in full and that you'll give lending to developing world entrepreneurs another chance in the future.

Thank you,

Default of Your Loan to an Entrepreneur with Action Now: Kenya

Entrepreneur: Margaret Nthenya Mangeli
Location: Pipeline ,nairobi, Kenya

After continuing non-payment to Kiva, all active Action Now: Kenya loans have now been defaulted. Kiva will continue to pursue recovery of funds on these loans and apply funds proportionally to lenders if and as funds are received. However, Kiva staff have judged the likelihood of recovery on these loans to be sufficiently low such as to update the loan status of these loans to “defaulted”.

For further details on this default, please see Action Now: Kenya’s Field Partner page: < href="http://www.kiva.org/about/aboutPartner?id=36">http://www.kiva.org/about/aboutPartner?id=36.

Clarification on Action Now: Kenya Loan

Entrepreneur: Margaret Nthenya Mangeli
Location: Pipeline ,nairobi, Kenya

Recently, a mass journal was sent out informing lenders that all of Action Now: Kenya’s active loans have defaulted after continued non-repayment from ANK to Kiva. This journal was erroneously posted to a number of loans from ANK that had been paid back in full and were not affected by the recent defaults.

To clear up any confusion that this mass journal caused, we want to let you know that these defaults only apply to lenders who have active loans with ANK. Kiva will continue to pursue recovery of funds on these loans and apply funds proportionally to lenders if and as funds are received. However, Kiva staff have judged the likelihood of recovery on these loans to be sufficiently low such as to update the loan status of these loans to “defaulted.” For more information about the default, please visit Action Now: Kenya’s Field Partner page here: http://www.kiva.org/about/aboutPartner?id=36.

We apologize for the error. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to post a comment below or email us at contactus@kiva.org.
