Carlos Enrique
Carlos is the victim of a forced displacement, due to the violence that occurred in his native city. There he had his own business, a cabinet-maker who worked daily to support his family. But many years ago they moved from the city in order to protect the lives of his wife and their 5 children. They left behind all they had constructed with effort and sacrifice.

After moving he started business again in a sub-leased shop, taking advantage of being able to recoup his machinery. He works Monday to Saturday from 8 am until 6 pm. She has the help of his wife and one of his children. He has the advantage of having two steady clients who produce many orders. His specialty is dining room sets, which he delivers unfinished and the customer takes care of the final touches. In this manner he has been able to get ahead with his family and has been able to build a new life.

The loan Carlos is requesting is to buy supplies wholesale (wood, sandpaper, glue, tacks, etc.). This will allow him to have sufficient material to complete the orders he has outstanding which will increase his sales and income. Carlos projects that in the near future he will build the house he wants, buy a vehicle for the business and have a well-structured and well-known business. He can then continue to generate the resources that allow his family economic stability and a better quality of living.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
