Bernard is a member of the Humuriza Group, and lives in Bujumbura. He is fifty-two years old and married to Necelate, who works as a vegetable grower. Together they have six children, aged between twelve and twenty-five years. All their children attend school. He is also responsible for another child, who is a member of his extended family, and is studying.

Bernard has sold various products (soap, clothes, slippers, etc) from his shop, for six years. This will be his fourth loan with the field partner, Turame. He plans to use his loan to increase his working capital and buy slippers, soap and clothing. He will then sell these products to increase his earnings.

In the coming years, Bernard would like to build a solid and long-lasting house, buy a car and provide for his children's schooling.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
