The Marantha Community Bank is beginning its fourteenth loan cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Villa Exaltación group. There are eight members and a board of directors; Sra. Mirian is the treasurer. The members run the following businesses: selling clothing, store selling lubricants, document processing assistance, food selling, selling footwear.

The loan the group is seeking will benefit small business owners like Miriam. She joined Pro Mujer seven years ago at the invitation of her sister who is also a member. Now she runs a business selling clothing, a job she learned from her friends as she used to help with their businesses. As time passed she decided to start a business of her own.

The loan she is now seeking is to buy more clothing from the wholesale dealers in the town of El Alto, and then sell it on her own stall. The money she earns will allow her to better maintain her house where she lives with her husband and two children. When Miriam is asked what she most likes about Pro Mujer, she replies that it is the training about loans.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
