More information about this loan

MEC Delta is a savings and credit cooperative located in the Senegal River delta region in Northern Senegal. Kiva funding is being used to fund loans to farmers, which are disbursed in-kind as agricultural inputs through MEC Delta's sister structure, DELTA Grisol. DELTA Grisol then collects crops from the farmers and brings them to market, repaying MEC Delta directly with proceeds from crop sales. This Kiva loan will thus be used to provide borrowers with needed goods or services, as opposed to cash or financial credit. The rest of the proceeds then belong to the farmer. Since MEC Delta works primarily with rice farmers, MEC Delta and Kiva lenders are exposed to risk due to crop failure, spoilage during the period of stockage prior to sale, and rice price fluctuation. This loan is not only helping a farmer to efficiently bring his goods to market, but supporting a farmer-owned cooperative and bolstering food security in Senegal.
