Golngai Lom group is formed of eighteen women who reside in a village which is about 40 kms from Imphal town in Manipur which is one of the northeastern states in India. Nengneilhing is one of the group members who runs a variety shop in the village. She is the profiled member for the group and she is pictured with her hand raised.

Nengneilhing generates income for the family by running a variety shop in a village. The village is about 4 and 1/2 kms from the district town and one has to pay rs.20 to the auto rickshaw driver as the fare to reach the village. She sells small sachets of shampoo, detergent powder, detergent bar soap, onions, garlic, potatoes, cereals etc. Essential needs are sold in the shop as villagers cannot travel to the town market for small items like matches and candles. She usually gets the supplies from the town or at the capital market. The generated income is small and insufficient to manage the family expenses and also to stock a large variety of supplies.

With the loan, she will purchase more cereals, first aid kits and drugs for common illnesses like coughs, diarrhea, and fever. The village is located in a remote place from the town which is a hurdle for easy access to everyday activities, for which reason she is inspired to become the most successful supplier for essential goods in the village. She is glad that Kiva will be supporting the group which is a big happiness for them since they usually get the working capital for their businesses from money lenders at high interest. She says “Thank you so much, Kiva, and God bless you all!"

The rest of the group members are engaged in weaving, piggery, poultry, vegetable selling, rice selling, etc.

About WSDS-Initiate
WSDS-Initiate is an inclusive nonprofit that works with women across all tribes and minority communities in Manipur, located in the remote northeast region of India. Most organizations concentrate their work in the plains region of Manipur, but WSDS is among the very few organizations serving women in the isolated hills. Political unrest and frequent economic blockades in the area make it very difficult to provide services, resulting in Manipur having the lowest penetration of financial services in the country.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
