The community association group "SANTA LUCIA de PESCADERAS" [The Santa Lucia Fishmongers] will begin its first cycle in Pro Mujer as part of the Achacachi regional office. The group consists of eight members and is headed by a board of which Gerónima is Treasurer. The businesses that the members of the community association have are varied and include a local shop, selling sweets, weaving blankets, food sales, and selling clothes.

The loan they are requesting will be useful for a small microentrepreneur like Gerónima. This is her first time working with Pro Mujer, entering on an invitation from a promoter of the institution who visited her home. Today, she has a business selling fish and fishing. She learned this business from her father several years ago. After her marriage, she decided to pursue the same business.

The loan she is requesting will bring an increase in working capital to purchase fishing nets wholesale in the markets in the city of La Paz. She will then sell fish in her retail space. This business allows her to generate resources to support her family, her husband and five children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, Gerónima says that she likes the training offered by the institution.

Two additional women are pictured accompanying the group. They are dressed in the white and cherry-colored blankets.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
