In 2009, 12 women from the small village of Balugaon stepped out, decided to build a secure future for their families and formed a group named Maa Kalijai Mahila Self Help Group. The members of Maa Kalijai Mahila Self Help Group are all women from the district of Khurda in Odisha, India. One of them is Posi, who was selected as their president. The lady in the picture seated second from the right is Posi. Posi is 30 years old and lives with her husband and her two children. Her husband is a farmer and has been involved in the activity of cultivation for a long time. She got the idea of doing vegetable cultivation from her husband, so she gathered some other women from her neighborhood and told them about her plan. They liked her idea and appreciated her. She took over the leadership of the group and started to cultivate vegetables and sell them in her village. Initially, she started growing only a few vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes, and onions but later on she grew bitter gourd, snake gourd, cucumbers, ladyfingers and brinjal (eggplant). She has a very good relationship with her customers as the vegetables she sells are fresh. Now she has a new idea to purchase some more land for cultivation so that she can grow more vegetables on a larger scale. For this reason, she has requested a loan. She will use the loan to purchase land, seeds and fertilizers.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
