Maribel
Maribel is twenty-eight years old. She makes a living at her own business selling frozen chicken and cold meats. She learned this trade during her three years working as an employee at a meat distributor. She later took a technical food course that complemented her knowledge and, with the desire to earn income as an independent businesswoman, began her own business in February 2012. She has the support of an employee and works every day beginning in the early morning hours. In this way, she is able to generate the necessary resources to cover her personal expenses and to economically support her family.

She is requesting a loan that she hopes to use to buy products wholesale. She will buy entire chickens, chicken pieces, different types of cold meats, eggs, milk products, and other items. This will allow her to meet the demand that always grows in the last month of the year, and to increase her profitability and earnings.

Maribel dreams of continuing to strengthen her business so that it endures and provides her with a favorable source of economic stability, giving her a better quality of life and well-being.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
