Hülya Şenel
Hülya has one child, and makes a living by selling jewelry. Her niece, who also makes jewelry, encouraged and taught her about the trade. She started out with only one bag of beads. As she sold things here and there, she bought more materials to make more jewelry. While learning to make jewelry, she made use of the information from her friends, books and CD’s. She uses these as well as the internet for inspiration for her variety of designs.

She took her first loan from Kiva 10 years ago. With that loan, she bought materials, and in turn gained capital, thus increasing her earnings. In the summer, she was able to sell a good amount of products from her seaside stall. As of now, she no longer has the materials to produce her jewelry, and would like the loan to buy goods to create more jewelry.

If she is able to gain more profit, her biggest dream is to open up her own shop.

Translated from Turkish by Maya Staff:

Hülya Hanımın 1 çocuğu var. Bir şeyler yapıp kazanç elde etmek istiyordu. Yeğeni takı işi yapıyordu. Hülya Hanımı da teşvik etti ve öğretti. İlk başlangıçta bir poşet boncukla başladı. Küçük küçük satışlar yapıp kazancıyla boncuk alıp tekrardan yapıp satıyordu. Takı yaparken arkadaşlarından, kitaplardan, CD lerden faydalandı. Buralardan takı çeşitlerine ve yapımına bakıp takılar yaptı. Şimdi internetten bakıp çeşitlerini arttırıyor. Bundan on sene önce mayadan ilk kredisini aldı.

Maya works to extend access to finance in Turkey, a country which, as a whole, has very limited microfinance services. By supporting this loan, you are helping Maya continue their work and specifically reach female borrowers in Turkey, many of whom come from rural parts of the country.

About Maya

Although Turkey is one of the largest economies in the region, it has not reached its potential for microfinance investment. Deficient legal structures for microfinance credit initiatives and lack of quality information about microfinance demand and structure in Turkey are the largest obstacles to improvements in the field. Under these challenging conditions, Maya provides group and individual loans to low-income women who lack access to the financial services they need in order to start or improve their own small-scale businesses. Maya borrowers are part of lending groups, but are posted to Kiva as individuals. Therefore, lenders are exposed to additional risk of default in the event that a member of this borrower's group defaults on her loan. Maya, established in 2002, was Turkey’s first microcredit program. Maya is Kiva’s first Field Partner in Turkey and posted its first loans in August 2011. Headquartered in Istanbul, Maya has four branch offices. For more information, visit Maya’s partner page.
