Karla Ivon
Karla is a 38 year old married woman, mother of a son, a farmer, a merchant, and has a BA in elementary education. Her husband is currently living in the United States and he helps by sending money to the family contributing to the household expenses and to pay school fees for their son who is a student.

Currently she is working in her profession as a kindergarten teacher at a community school and when she leaves she goes to do her farming activities growing corn, beans and sugar cane.

Much of her life she has rented land in order to grow basic grains and sugar cane which is sold to the local warehouse facilities which are about 2 kilometers away and which she travels by private vehicle or on horseback. She has no family to help out so she pays day laborers so that her fields can be cared for and when it is time for the harvest of the grain or cutting the sugar cane she once again pays for workers creating jobs in the community although the earnings are small.

Her dreams are to be able to buy her own land someday where she can grow her product, to be the biggest supplier and producer in the area, give her son an excellent education and to be prepared with many ideas and many opportunities in life to grow. This is why she is asking for funding from the cooperative COMIXMUL in order to buy fertilizers, manure, and for clearing and preparing the land, and more that will help with the sugar cane crop.

More information about this loan

These loans are designed for female farmers who produce a variety of products (onion, garlic, eggplant, spinach, mango, strawberries, etc.). Loan terms will vary depending on need, and borrowers can choose to make a "bullet" payment timed with harvest profits. Agricultural loans are considered risky in Honduras due to external forces like unpredictable weather and worldwide crop prices. As a result, many traditional financial institutions are unwilling to offer these loans. With Kiva funding, COMIXMUL will be able to reach more borrowers with agricultural loans tailored to their needs.
