Luz Mery
Luz, at 47 years old, is an active and hard working woman, dedicated to her family and her work. She lives with her husband and their only daughter who is 12. They have helped her get ahead with a lot of effort. During her productive life, Luz worked as an employee at a greengrocers, but due to the eviction of the space where the shop was located, she decided to start a business for herself and take advantage of all the knowledge and experience she had gained working in the business. She works on her own from 7 am to 5.30 pm to catch the flow of people passing through the area. Like this she has managed to earn enough income to contribute to the family"s finances over the 24 years that she has run the business.

She is currently asking for a loan so that she can invest in repairing the shelves (paint) and buy produce in bulk (fruits and vegetables). This will allow her to present a better image of the business and attract new customers. She will also have a wider variety of products on offer to satisfy the needs of her customers. Luz also wants to expand her business, and strengthen it so that it will last and maybe become more profitable. This would guarantee a economic stability that would allow her to offer a better education and training in values to her daughter so she will have a better future and well-being.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
