Malika is 54 years old, married and has three children and a few grandchildren. Her family's main source on income is livestock and Malika's daughters-in-law help her with the animals. Unfortunately, livestock and dairy sales are not enough to provide for a large family, so all the men are now migrant workers in Russia, making money for everyone back home. Malika wishes she could help her family more, as the family is growing and the house needs to be expanded. In the face of winter the family also needs to stock up on fuel to warm the house. Malika would like to take out a loan to expand the house and has turned to "Arvand" for a loan. She plans to use the loan to buy building materials.

Malika has been working with Arvand for three years and has a good credit history. She is happy with the loan conditions and is grateful that there is an organization which is ready to provide help for people in need.

About MDO Arvand

MDO Arvand is one of the leading microfinance institutions in Tajikistan, offering small loans to entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses. This makes an enormous difference in a country, which is not only the poorest in Central Asia, but also home to a population where two-thirds live below the poverty line. Today, Tajikistan's economy literally depends on remittances being sent from family members working abroad in Russia because there are so few local job opportunities.

But Arvand loans have been able to make a difference and change lives. Read about some of the incredible success stories they have seen here in this Kiva blog post: Bringing hope to Tajikistan with Arvand -- one success story at a time.
