María Lourdes
María is 47 years old. She is the single mother of one child who she has raised alone, as she never had the support of the father of her child. A few years ago she started to work as an employee in a clothing store. The opportunity came up to buy the business as the owner unexpectedly had to travel and proposed selling it to her. So with the help of her dad she managed to buy the business.

She has now been in business for 7 years. She works every day from 8 am to 8 pm. In this way she can generate the revenues needed to pay for the household expenses and get her child ahead.

María is requesting the help of a loan to invest in buying wholesale merchandise (jeans, pants, shirts, T-shirts, jackets, etc.). Then she can stock her business to meet the raising demand that comes with the Holiday season and then the coffee harvest. There are more people and coffee middleman in the area which will allow her to increase her sales and the income that this generates.

María dreams of having her own property where she can expand her business and generate more revenue and profit which would allow her to enjoy an economic stability and a better quality of living alongside her son.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
