Zedei Bestabe
Zedei lives in Totolapan with her husband Irving and their son Kevin. They live near her mother and grandmother. This makes it really easy for Zedei to drop Kevin with her grandma every morning and then walk to the market, where she sells cooked meals with her mother. Zedei has been working at the market for over three years. Irving works as a farmer in the fields of their neighbors. Zedei and Irving have been married for a little more than three years.

Every month they use some of their income to build more of their house. They have come a long way but still there are some additions to be made. Right now the family uses Zedei's mother's bathroom, next to their own house. She is happy to help them and have them there every evening when they shower, but for the family this arrangement has become a little uncomfortable. They also want to build a bedroom for Kevin since he is growing up very fast and may be joined by a sibling soon.

Zedei and Irving make around $600 USD a month. Since they are both informally self employed, they have no way of showing their income and therefore have no access to formal credit. With their loan they will receive all the building materials they need as well as technical assistance and supervision from certified technicians, who will monitor and supervise the construction work to make sure that all quality and safety standards are met.

Zedei is excited to see her house and her dreams grow, but most of all, she is excited to build a beautiful house where Kevin and her future children will grow up.

Ecoblock is a social housing production company that delivers affordable homes and home improvements to communities through a program called Echale a tu Casa. They place a particular emphasis on areas where families do not have access to any microfinance institutions.

About Echale

Ecoblock International (“Ecoblock”) is a social housing company dedicated to providing marginalized communities in Mexico with opportunities to significantly improve their housing conditions. Founded in 1997, it started a program called Échale a Tu Casa that develops affordable housing solutions for underserved communities through innovations in construction, technology and finance. Focusing its efforts on urban and rural areas where families have little or no access to microcredit, the program has supported 30,000 families to construct new homes, and has delivered home improvement assistance to an additional 150,000 families.

Ecoblock joined Kiva through our Experimental Partnership Program, and has therefore received a lighter level of due diligence. Accordingly, loans associated with this partner carry a higher level of risk than typical Kiva loans.
