Senorino has lived in Totolapan, Morelos, and has worked as a cactus grower for the last 30 years of his life. His wife Maria Luisa used to help him but with four kids she is pretty busy at home! To have some extra cash for household expenses Senorino started using his own truck as a unregistered taxi, taking take his neighbors that had no transportation to where they needed to go.

With his two jobs Senorino makes around $1,000 USD a month. Today the family lives in a house which they feel suits them well. The only problem is that all the rooms in the house have a tin roof instead of a proper roof. This has brought some problems to the family regarding their health, especially to their youngest child who has a respiratory disease.

Senorino has been saving for the last three months to buy the materials needed to build a proper roof above their house. With his loan Senorino will also receive technical assistance and supervisory visits to make sure the new roof meets quality and safety standards. Senorino is sure that once the roof is done the high temperatures in summer will be more bearable and they will be shielded from the strong winds in winter. Senorino is also sure that her daughter's health will start to improve.

About Echale

Ecoblock International (“Ecoblock”) is a social housing company dedicated to providing marginalized communities in Mexico with opportunities to significantly improve their housing conditions. Founded in 1997, it started a program called Échale a Tu Casa that develops affordable housing solutions for underserved communities through innovations in construction, technology and finance. Focusing its efforts on urban and rural areas where families have little or no access to microcredit, the program has supported 30,000 families to construct new homes, and has delivered home improvement assistance to an additional 150,000 families.

Ecoblock joined Kiva through our Experimental Partnership Program, and has therefore received a lighter level of due diligence. Accordingly, loans associated with this partner carry a higher level of risk than typical Kiva loans.
