Patricia and her husband Gregorio live with their three children in Totolapan, Morelos. Patricia works as a cleaner in a motel a couple of towns away. She has long hours but says she would rather work there than in the field like her husband. Patricia and Gregorio have worked really hard to have the house they live in. However, their kids are growing, especially the two oldest Anastacia and Sara, and these girls need a bedroom of their own to replace the living room they currently sleep in.

Patricia knows that the family can be protected against the cold weather in winter and hot temperatures in summer if they change their current tin roof to a proper cement roof. This change will also help them keep the house in better condition and will improve the health of the family. Patricia has been saving for the last three months to buy materials for the improvements she wants to make to house. She is requesting a loan to finish paying for the materials.

Patricia and Gregorio both have informal jobs and low incomes so many institutions will not give them credit. The family will receive supervisory visits from certified technicians to monitor the quality and progress of the construction. The new construction will give this family a healthier life and a space for the girls to have more privacy. Patricia is aware that dedication and hard work is what makes dreams come true.

Ecoblock is a social housing production company that delivers affordable homes and home improvements to communities through a program called Echale a tu Casa. Echale sells technical assistance for self-organized and self-production housing in rural and urban communities. Ecoblock focuses on the poorest socioeconomic strata in Mexico (levels C, D & E). They place a particular emphasis on areas where families do not have access to any microfinance institutions.

About Echale

Ecoblock International (“Ecoblock”) is a social housing company dedicated to providing marginalized communities in Mexico with opportunities to significantly improve their housing conditions. Founded in 1997, it started a program called Échale a Tu Casa that develops affordable housing solutions for underserved communities through innovations in construction, technology and finance. Focusing its efforts on urban and rural areas where families have little or no access to microcredit, the program has supported 30,000 families to construct new homes, and has delivered home improvement assistance to an additional 150,000 families.

Ecoblock joined Kiva through our Experimental Partnership Program, and has therefore received a lighter level of due diligence. Accordingly, loans associated with this partner carry a higher level of risk than typical Kiva loans.
