Maria Belen Elizabeth
Maria Belen lives with her husband, Mario, and their three children in Totolapan Morelos. Maria has made a living selling prepared food in a stall at the market for the last 14 years. Mario works in the field growing and cropping vegetables for other farmers. Maria and Mario work hard to give their children the opportunity they didn't have to study, at least through middle school, and have a better life. Their youngest son, Juan Pablo, still sleeps with his parents because of lack of space. Meanwhile Maritza and Manuel, who are two fast growing teenagers, share the same room which has become a challenge. They both need their own space to study, sleep and live.

Maria is always looking out for her children and understands the importance of giving each of them their space at this critical age. Maria and Mario make no more than $800 USD a month through informal jobs, so accessing credit is impossible to them. For the last three months, they have been saving to build a bedroom for the boys and finish the kitchen, which doesn't have a proper roof. Maria needs this loan to finish paying for the construction materials. She and her husband will receive supervision visits from certified technicians to monitor the quality and progress of the construction. This new addition will give everyone in the family the space they need, and as a result will make it easier for her children to study and do their homework. Maria is aware that dedication and hard work is what will give her family a better life.

About Echale

Ecoblock International (“Ecoblock”) is a social housing company dedicated to providing marginalized communities in Mexico with opportunities to significantly improve their housing conditions. Founded in 1997, it started a program called Échale a Tu Casa that develops affordable housing solutions for underserved communities through innovations in construction, technology and finance. Focusing its efforts on urban and rural areas where families have little or no access to microcredit, the program has supported 30,000 families to construct new homes, and has delivered home improvement assistance to an additional 150,000 families.

Ecoblock joined Kiva through our Experimental Partnership Program, and has therefore received a lighter level of due diligence. Accordingly, loans associated with this partner carry a higher level of risk than typical Kiva loans.
