Mario
Mario, 56, is a widower and lives with his mother. He plans to use the loan to buy supplies, such as fertilizer, for his corn crop. He has been working in agriculture for several years and needs to buy these products and make improvements on his cropland.

Mario hopes to increase production to earn more profit for his family's well being. He will pay back the loan with the income from his corn crop and, what is most important, his economy will improve.

This is his second loan through FUDECOSUR. Mario has never received any state bank loans and FUDECOSUR is giving him better payment terms and a much lower interest rate.

More information about this loan

FUDECOSUR works in one of the poorest regions of Costa Rica, where microfinance institutions (MFIs) are scarce or have a hard time keeping up with demand for small loans. By providing mostly agricultural loans, FUDECOSUR reaches rural borrowers that many MFIs consider to be too risky. However, this has also made it more difficult for the organization to find stable sources of capital to lend. Kiva's flexible, risk-tolerant capital plays a critical role in helping FUDECOSUR grow its portfolio and support even more borrowers.
