Estela, 44, has been affected by unemployment in the city so she decided to start her own business with her mother. One week ago, she opened a small shop with a variety of products. She works by herself every day from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The idea came from the need to earn income to support her household and watch over her family's well-being. Her family consists of her husband and their only son.

Estela has an enterprising spirit. Her efforts and her desire to move forward motivated her to request this loan. She wants to invest in stocking wholesale products (sunglasses, cosmetics, toys, personal hygiene products, and more) to have a greater variety of products available to satisfy her customers' needs. This will allow her to increase sales and also the income she receives for her work.

Estela wants to make her business a successful source of income so she can continue to provide sufficient economic resources to give her son an excellent education and to support her husband with household expenses. She also hopes to enjoy a better quality of life along with those she loves.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
